It wasn't terrible (well okay, 'Contagious' was far from good, actually) but it certainly wasn't 'METAL' anymore. But then they went on and did stuff like 'Summertime Girls' and 'Contagious-' just watered down vanilla hard rock. They had a couple tracks like 'Forever' and 'Black Tiger' that were pure blistering metal, albeit mainstream Judas Priest caliber metal. It's a good radio friendly rock n' roll tune- good for what it is. I mean, it's got a good, catchy riff, and the solo is as good as it gets. Now this isn't really a BAD song, by any means. My go-to band when I didn't necessarily want to be obliterated by blistering thrash or death, but wanted a genuine metal fix to rock out to. Not necessarily the heaviest or most extreme bands around, but you could hear their stuff on the radio and sympathetically bang your head and give the forked horned finger salute to. But to me, it was, at least, true metal, in the same way that classic 80's metal like Accept, Judas Priest, and Dio were true metal. Now, granted, I know: Volbeat were never exactly on the cutting edge of heaviness, and there was always a certain mainstream radio friendly vibe to their stuff. I just heard the new lead single off the newest Volbeat album.
